In 2026, the United States marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.

The flag’s 50 stars represent the states, and its 13 stripes honor the original colonies. The current design has flown since 1960.

Tradition holds that Betsy Ross sewed an early American flag in 1776 after meeting with George Washington, though historians still debate the story.
